Review for "Soul Surfer"

Soul Surfer

Starring: AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, and Carrie Underwood

Synopsis: A champion surfer loses her left arm in a terrifying shark attack, but summons the determination to make an incredible comeback in this inspirational sports drama based on an incredible true story. A lifelong surfer who always felt at home in the sea, Bethany Hamilton honed her surfing skills in Kauai, and went on to compete in numerous surfing competitions. Then, one fateful Halloween morning, the wave-riding teen was taking part in a national surf competition when a 14-foot-long tiger shark emerged from the depths and changed her life in the blink of an eye. By the time Bethany reached shore, her left arm was almost completely gone. But just when it started to look like she would never ride a surfboard again, young Bethany used her faith and determination to reclaim the title of champion while being cheered on by her supportive parents, and Sara, the kind-hearted leader of a local youth group.

Verdict: I loved this movie!!! It was an inspiration to everyone to always follow your dreams, have faith, and know that nothing can keep you down except yourself. This movie touches the heart even more deeply because you know that this is real, that Bethany is a real person out there who overcame these tremendous odds. This is a definite must-see!!!

Review: Slayed by Amanda Marrone

Title: Slayed
Author: Amanda Marrone
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Publication Date: October 5, 2010

Synopsis: The Van Helsing family has been hunting vampires for over one hundred years, but sixteen-year-old Daphne wishes her parents would take up an occupation that doesn’t involve decapitating vamps for cash. All Daphne wants is to settle down in one place, attend an actual school, and finally find a BFF to go to the mall with. Instead, Daphne has resigned herself to a life of fast food, cheap motels and buying garlic in bulk.
But when the Van Helsings are called to a coastal town in Maine, Daphne’s world is turned upside down. Not only do the Van Helsings find themselves hunting a terrifying new kind of vampire (one without fangs but with a taste for kindergarten cuisine), Daphne meets her first potential BF! The hitch? Her new crush is none other than Tyler Harker, AKA, the son of the rival slayer family.

What's a teen vampire slayer to do?

Verdict: This was a fun and fast-paced read that I thoroughly enjoyed! I loved the quirky characters: Daphne, Kiki, and Tyler; and I loved this book!!!

Rating: 4/5 Stars- Really good book!!! :D

Review: First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

Title: First Grave on the Right
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson, #1
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication Date: February 1, 2011

Synopsis: A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper.

Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to go into the light. But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

Verdict: This book was ahhhh-mazing!!! I loved Charley Davidson's spunky attitude and sarcasm. There were certain things she said that had me laughing out loud and earning a few strange looks from the other people in the room. I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to read the sequel!!!

Review: Virals by Kathy Reichs

Title: Virals
Author: Kathy Reichs
Series: Virals, #1
Publisher: Razorbill
Publication Date: November 2, 2010

Synopsis: Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage "sci-philes" who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.

As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer's scent.

Fortunately, they are now more than friends they're a pack. They are Virals.

Verdict: I loved this book!!! It was so fast-paced and full of awesome that I whipped through 448 pages in three days. I could barely put it down!!! I will definitely be the first one in line to buy the sequel when it comes out!!! Plus if you are a fan of the T.V. series Bones, then you will definitely want to check this book out!!! The only real qualm I had with it was a lack of any kind of romance, but I'm hoping that something will develop in the sequel.  :))

Review for the Movie "Hanna"

Hanna
Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, and Cate Blanchett
Synopsis: A teenage assassin raised in remote Finland is dispatched on a dangerous mission by her father, an ex-CIA operative, in this innovative action thriller from director Joe Wright. Hanna (Ronan) may look like your typical teenage girl, but she's a trained killer who has spent her entire life preparing for one mission. Schooled in the arts of survival and killing by her mysterious father (Bana), Hanna finally reaches the age when she must put her skills to the test, and sets out across Europe on a collision course with a cunning intelligence operative (Blanchett) who has been awaiting her arrival for years. Later, as agents close in from all sides and Hanna finally gets her target in the crosshairs, the trained assassin uncovers some secrets from the past that stir the conscience she never knew she had, and cause her to question everything she has ever known.
Verdict: This movie was awesome!!! Hanna is a kick butt teenager who can kill you with your own knife. The beginning(ish) of the move was ahhhh-mazing and fast-paced, it then it slows down a bit toward the middle(ish), only to end ahhhh-mazingly! This movie is definitely worth seeing!!!

Review: Educating Caroline by Patricia Cabot

Title: Educating Caroline
Author: Patricia Cabot
Publisher: Pocket
Publication Date: October 30, 2001

Synopsis: Lady Caroline Linford is horrified to discover...
her fiancé, the Marquis of Winchilsea, in the arms of another woman. Unfortunately, Victorian society considers such masculine peccadilloes a trifle; canceling their imminent wedding would be unthinkable. But Caroline's wish is for the man she is to marry to desire only her... and she seeks lessons in the art of romance from the best teacher: London's most notorious rake.

Braden Granville may be a famous lover...
but he has no intention of taking part in Caroline's scheme — until he learns she has something he wants: the name of his own unfaithful fiancĂ©e's lover. As their passionate tutelage begins, sparks fly — and the lines between teacher and student fall away. Now there is just one last lesson to learn: on the subject of true love, the heart chooses its own unpredictable ways.

Verdict: I thought this story was absolutely adorable. I loved the main characters Caroline and Braden and even Caroline's crazy brother, Tommy, and even crazier best friend Emily. I enjoyed reading about everything Caroline and Braden had to go through before they could finally get their happy ending. I zipped through this book in three days and loved every single page of it!!!

New Reviews (for Movies)!!!

I have recently (and when I say recently I really mean these past few months) read a lot of new books and watched a lot of new movies and I will now tell you what I thought about them. But I'm going to split the blogs into two, one for Movies and one for Books. This will be my Movie Review Blog for April 6, 2011!!!
___________________________________________________________________________
First of all, I will go ahead and get this out of the way. I rented Black Swan and was so excited to see it, because I have heard some really great reviews!!! But I was super disappointed. This movie was........ Weird and slightly disturbing. That is the only way to describe it. The only really AWESOME part was the final dance where she actually grew some black wings and became the black swan. I'm not gonna lie, that part was really cool. But the rest of it, not so much. Of course, don’t just take what I have said here and decide not to watch it; you need to make your own assumptions. I’m just letting you know, that I won’t be buying this movie.

Black Swan
Starring: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel
Storyline:
Short Version: A ballet dancer wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan.
Long Version: Nina (Natalie Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

I also rented and watched The Tourist, and I loved it!!! First thing I loved about it, Johnny Depp is in it and he is one of my favorite actors. Second thing, the plot is amazing, I wish I could explain it further but then I would ruin it for you all, so I’ll zip my lips (or should I say hands?) and leave it to you to go watch it because it was just………………… WOW!!!

The Tourist
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, and Paul Bettany
Story Line: Elise (Angelina Jolie) sits next to an American tourist, Frank (Johnny Depp), on a train going to Venice. She has chosen him as a decoy, making believe that he is her lover who is wanted by police. Not only will they need to evade the police, but also the mobster whose money her lover stole.

Another movie that I rented was Despicable Me (even though it was a “cartoon”), because I am still a kid at heart. It was so cute and heart-warming. I loved this movie too. I definitely recommend it to not only children but to all adults, because it was absolutely adorable!!!

Despicable Me
Starring (the Voices of): Steve Carell, Jason Segel and Russell Brand
Storyline:
Short Version: When a criminal mastermind uses a trio of orphan girls as pawns for a grand scheme, he finds their love is profoundly changing him for the better.
Long Version: In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru, planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. (Yes, the moon!) Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.

Thanks for Reading,
-KWB
