Blog Me MAYbe!

Hello Bloggy Followers!
So I just discovered Blog Me MAYbe created by Sara McClung. It's a fun blogging effort taking place during the month of May to prompt us to write great blog posts!

The Purpose: To get back in the habit of blogging regularly by following a weekly format for the month of May. (Or if you already post regularly, to have an easy schedule to follow without having to struggle with what to blog about.) (But if posting every day sounds like too much, or if you miss a few days, or only do a couple posts a week, who cares, yanno?)
What you DON'T have to do: Follow every blog that participates and comment on everyone's posts every day. This isn't a blogfest to gain followers--although maybe that will happen! And of course if you WANT to follow everyone, feel free :)

But really the point of this is to focus mostly on our own blogs and to write posts about things we're interested in that our followers will want to read about.
The Schedule:

  • Mondays: May I tell you something about writing?
    • This can be anything writing-related. A post on craft. A post on your process. A snippet of your WIP, if you like to share. A book on craft that you want to recommend. Things you struggle with. Things you rock at. ANYTHING at all!
  • Tuesdays: May I tell you something about myself?
    • Pretty self-explanatory :) Share something about yourself that your follows might not know. Or maybe they do. It doesn't matter--this is just so people who read your blog can get to know you a little better.
  • Wednesdays: May I ask something about you?
    • Ask your followers something about themselves.
  • Thursdays: May I tell you something about someone else?
    • Make this post about someone else. A writing friend. A critique partner. A person from history who's fascinating. A character from a book. Anyone you want :) Have a guest poster. Give an interview. Get creative! Just let the spotlight shine on someone else.
  • Fridays: May I share something funny?
    • Fridays = the starts of weekends! BOOYA. Reason to celebrate and laugh on it's own--plus, who doesn't want to see something amusing after a long week?

Taken from Sara's blog.
Sounds fun, right? If you'd like to participate head on over to Sara's blog and sign up!  :))

Daemon Invasion!

Over the last couple of weeks, you might have heard us talking about the upcoming #daemoninvasion and I'm so excited to finally share with you what is going on.

Really excited.

The beautiful and uber cool models, Pepe Toth and Sztella Tziotziosz, who grace the Lux covers, will be joining us in the United States!  You heard right.  They are flying here, from Hungary to spend a few days as Daemon and Katy! While they are here, they will be working with Vania, from VLC Productions (the team behind Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments, Melissa de La Cruz, Kimberly Derting, Moira Young, Kami Garcia and Margret Stohl, Hillary Duff, Lauren Destefano, and many, many more authors’ book trailers), to film book trailers for the Lux Series.
During the filming in Atlanta, they will be accompanying Jennifer on tour! What does that mean? You get to meet them. In the flesh. They will be participating in the signings and events. At those signings, we'll be giving away signed posters, photos, and other swag. There will also be meet and greet events you can join in on.
At each signing, there will be advanced copies of Onyx given away!
And to top things off (as if this isn’t enough, but we don’t do anything small), there’s something very, very exciting in the works! It involves advanced copies of Opal, water, and a little destination known as the Bahamas.
I am not kidding.
This will be epic.
Are you excited? I am! This tour is going to be so, so much fun, and I’m so thrilled that Pepe and Sztella are a part of it. We owe them a huge thank you and a giant welcome making the 16 hour flight to meet the readers of the Lux Series.  You!

Blog Tour: Clockwise by Elle Strauss (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Hello Bloggy Followers! I am so excited to be participating in this book tour organized by A Tale of Many Reviews for Elle Strauss' novel: Clockwise!

And..... I have an excerpt from the book to show you on the blog today! :)) But first, a little bit more information about Elle:
Elle writes time travel and merfolk chic-lit, light SF and historical YA fiction. She's a married mom of four, and lives in the beautiful Okanagan Valley, famous for beaches and vineyards. She's fond of Lindt's sea salt dark chocolate and hiking in good weather. Her Young Adult rom/com time-travel CLOCKWISE series and contemporary/otherworldly Middle Grade IT'S A LITTLE HAYWIRE are now available on Amazon.
Excerpt:

Just as we approached the exit I spotted Nate. What was he doing here? Seeing him outside of the context of school was weird, though any context seemed to have the same effect on me. Dry throat, butterflies in my stomach, the urge to squeal.

I tried to make a smooth maneuver out of his line of vision, but instead ran directly into a rack of blouses, almost knocking it over. He saw me. Of course he saw me! The whole store stopped to observe. His eyes didn’t flick away. Okay, I’m a train wreck, you don’t have to stare.

He finally looked back at what he was watching before—Jessica presenting a pretty ivory dress. At first, she seemed startled to see me but then she grinned her evil grin. What? Did she think she was getting married to him? It looked like a dumb wedding dress. I really hoped she didn’t pick that one.

A wave of dizziness smacked me as I tried to stand. Then a flash of bright light.

Clockwise (Clockwise, #1) by Elle Strauss
Synopsis: Casey Donovan has issues: hair, height and uncontrollable trips to the 19th century! And now this --she’s accidentally taken Nate Mackenzie, the cutest boy in the school, back in time. Awkward.

Protocol pressures her to tell their 1860 hosts that he is her brother and when Casey finds she has a handsome, wealthy (and unwanted) suitor, something changes in Nate. Are those romantic sparks or is it just “brotherly” protectiveness?

When they return to the present, things go back to the way they were before: Casey parked on the bottom of the rung of the social ladder and Nate perched high on the very the top. Except this time her heart is broken. Plus, her best friend is mad, her parents are split up, and her younger brother gets escorted home by the police. The only thing that could make life worse is if, by some strange twist of fate, she took Nate back to the past again.

Which of course, she does.

Review: Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

Title: Grave Mercy
Author: Robin LaFevers
Series: His Fair Assassin, #1
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Publication Date: April 3, 2012

Synopsis: Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae's most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

Verdict: **le sigh** Grave Mercy is ahhh-mazing! Robin LaFevers had given me a new book to add to my favorites shelf! This book tells the story of Ismae, a handmaiden of death. She serves St. Mortain at a convent by training to be an assassin. The nuns teach the handmaidens over a hundred different ways to kill a man so that when Mortain gives someone the marque, they will be able to kill them. Ismae is given a very important assignment and is sent to the city of Brittany under the disguise of a mistress to Duval. While there she must balance the task of serving Mortain and her duchess, Anne, while staying true to her heart. I adored all the characters in this book! Ismae is a wounded soul who only wants to do what is right. Duval is handsome and extremely loyal. Anne is very young and already had the weight of the world on her shoulders. I loved the plot, the writing, and the sweet budding romance!  The sequel, Dark Triumph, will tell the story of Sybella, a fellow handmaiden of death and dear friend to Ismae. I am interested in reading Sybella's story, but am really hoping to read more about what has become of Ismae and Duval! Overall, I definitely recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction, assassins, and those who just want to read a really good book.  <3

Excerpt:

I mentally stomped on the intimidation their perfection brought into my mind and said, “Excuse me.”

The group froze, startled by my words. The girls had their brows raised and the boys stopped mid-speech, mouths agape. They stared at me with eyes the shade of onyx stones.

I smiled and gave them a little wave.

The boy a step ahead of the rest recovered first. His stunning features went from shocked surprise to intense interest. He reminded me of a hawk eyeing its prey. I gulped.

“A Day Student,” he said, his eyes insolent and excited.

Something about the way he said “Day Student” made my stomach flip. “Excuse me?”

They snickered. The boys looked at each other while the girls continued to stare, muffling their laughter by delicate hands. I seemed to be the butt of some joke.

“You broke the rule.” The boy’s grin turned predatory.

The students formed a loose semi-circle in front of me. My gaze darted from face to face. Hunger filled their eyes. The image of lions about to chase down a gazelle came to mind. I mentally shook my head. I was in the mountains not the Serengeti for crying out loud.

I took a small step back and cleared my throat. “Can any of you give me a ride back to the dorms?”

The boy wagged his forefinger like a metronome. “Ah, that’s unfortunate for you.”

One of the girls pinched the bridge of her nose. “Eli, you can’t possibly—”

“It’s forbidden, Eli,” another boy interrupted, pronouncing the word “forbidden” like a curse.

The nervous murmur at the pit of my stomach grew louder. Six against one. Not good odds. Instinct told me to cut my losses and run. Bad enough I faced expulsion, now it seemed like weird, beautiful people who’d suddenly appeared on campus wanted to beat me up. No, scratch that. Judging from the way they studied me, beating me up wouldn’t satisfy them. Something more primal prowled behind their looks.

I definitely wasn’t going down without a fight. Years of self-defense and hand-to-hand combat classes had me prepared. While other children from rich and important families got bodyguards, I got defense training. But I think my father meant for my skills to go up against potential kidnappers, not against other students who may or may not be crazy. Oh God! Maybe I stepped into a parallel universe or something when I reentered Barinkoff.

“None of the students are supposed to be on campus,” I said. Then, realizing my mistake, I added, “Okay, I know I’m not supposed to be here either. If one of you gives me a ride back to the dorms, I won’t say anything about all this. Let’s pretend this never happened. I didn’t see you, you didn’t see me.”

“We’re not ordinary students,” Eli answered. “We’re the Night Students.”

He’d said “Night Students” like the words were capitalized. I didn’t know Barinkoff held classes at night. What was going on here?

Eli smiled with just one side of his mouth and said to the group, “She’s right, no one will have to know. We’re the only ones here. And it’s been so long, don’t you agree?”

The rest of them nodded reluctantly.

“What’s been so long?” I challenged. I fisted my hands, ready to put them up if any of them so much as twitched my way.

“Since the taste of real flesh passed through my lips,” Eli said. He came forward and took a whiff of me then laughed when I cringed.

“Flesh.” Yep, parallel universe.

“Yes,” he said. “And yours smells so fresh.”

Someone grabbed my shoulders from behind and yanked me back before I could wrap my mind around the meaning behind Eli’s words. In a blink, I found myself behind someone tall. Someone really tall. And quite broad. And very male.

I realized he wore the same clothes Eli and the other boys did. Not good. He was one of them. Although… I cocked my head, raking my gaze over him. He seemed born to wear the uniform, like he was the pattern everyone else was cut from. My eyes wandered to long, layered, blue-black hair tied at the nape by a silk ribbon. Even in dim light, his hair possessed a sheen akin to mercury.

I looked down. The boy’s long fingers were wrapped around my wrist like a cuff. His fevered touch felt hotter than human standards, hot enough to make me sweat like I was standing beside a radiator but not hot enough to burn.

“I must be mistaken, Eli,” the boy who held my arm said in a monotone. “Correct me. Did I hear you say you wanted to taste the flesh of this girl?”

A hush descended on us. It had the hairs at the back of my neck rising. How was it possible for the atmosphere to switch from threatening to dangerous? Unable to help myself, I peeked around the new guy’s bulk. Eli and his friends bowed. They all had their right hands on their chests.

“Demitri, I’m sure you misheard me,” Eli said.

So the guy standing between me and the person who said he’d wanted to taste me was named Demitri. I like the sound of his name. Demitri. So strong, yet rolls off the tongue. Definite yum factor.

“So, you imply I made a mistake?” Demitri demanded.

“No!” Eli lifted his gaze. “I did no such thing. I simply wanted to show the girl the consequences of breaking curfew.”

“Hey!” I yelled. “Don’t talk about me like I’m not here!”

Demitri ignored my protest and continued to address Eli. “So, you threatened to taste her flesh.” His fingers tightened their grip around my wrist. “In the interest of investigating this matter further, I invoke the Silence.”

All six students gasped, passing surprised glances at one another.

Before I could ask about what was going on, Demitri yanked me down the hall toward the library. But why there? Oh, maybe we were getting my things. No, wait, he couldn’t have known about that. Everything was too confusing now.

Eli and the others didn’t try to stop us when we passed them. Demitri’s cold command must have carried power. Handsome and powerful, never a bad combination on a guy.

We reached the heavy double doors in seconds. He jerked one open effortlessly. I’d needed all my strength just to squeeze through that same door earlier. To him, the thick wood might as well have been cardboard. I raised an eyebrow and mentally listed the benefits of going to gym class.

“Why are we here?” I asked after my curiosity overpowered my worry. I’d almost forgotten how frightened I’d been right before Demitri showed up. I wasn’t above accepting help from strangers. Especially from gorgeous dark-haired strangers with hot hands and wide shoulders.

Demitri kept going, tugging me along, snaking his way deeper into the library. I had to take two steps for every stride his legs made. I tried to stay directly behind him, praying we didn’t slam into anything.

He stopped suddenly and I collided with him. It felt like slamming into a wall.

“Hey,” I said, momentarily stunned. “A little warning would be nice!”

He faced me, and I gasped. His eyes resembled a starless night, deep and endless. Their intensity drilled through me without pity, seeming to expose all my secrets. I felt naked and flustered beneath his gaze.

“You could have died back there,” he warned.

A lump of panic rebuilt itself in my throat.

Cover Reveal: Splintered by A.G. Howard

Title: Splintered
Author: A.G. Howard
Publisher: Amulet Books
Publication Date: January 2013

Synopsis: For sixteen years, Alyssa Gardner has lived with the stigma of being descended from Alice Liddell -- the real life inspiration for Lewis Carroll's famed novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But cruel jokes about dormice and tea parties can’t compare to the fact that Alyssa hears the whispers of bugs and flowers ... the same quirk which sent her mother to a mental institution years before.

When her mother takes a turn for the worse and the whispers grow too strong for Alyssa to bear, she seeks the origins of their family curse. A set of heirlooms and a moth tied to an unusual website lead Alyssa and her gorgeous best friend / secret crush, Jeb, down the rabbit hole into the real Wonderland, a place more twisted and eerie than Lewis Carroll ever let on.

There, creepy counterparts of the original fairytale crew reveal the purpose for Alyssa’s journey, and unless she fixes the things her great-great-great grandmother Alice put wrong, Wonderland will have her head.

About the Author: When Anita first began publishing short stories, one of her editors referred to her work as “eloquent and mind-startling.” That carried over into her novels, and to this day she’s most at home when weaving the melancholy and macabre into settings and scenes, twisting the expected into the unexpected. She’s inspired by all things flawed, utilizing the complex loveliness of human conditions and raw emotions to give her characters life, then turning their world upside down so the reader’s blood will race.
Married and mother of two teens (as well as surrogate mom to two Labrador retrievers), Anita divides her days between spending time with her family and plodding along or plotting on her next book.
When she’s not writing, Anita enjoys rollerblading, dirt-biking, snow skiing, gardening, and family vacations that at any given time might include an impromptu side trip to an 18th century graveyard or a condemned schoolhouse for photo ops.
Be sure to drop by Anita's twitter or blog and say "Hi." She's always up for meeting new friends!

Hello Bloggy Followers! I am so excited to be participating in this book tour organized by A Tale of Many Reviews for Denise Grover Swank's novel: Here!

Excerpt:

Evan leans forward. “What’s that?”

Covering it with my hand, I slide it toward my backpack. “It's just doodling. I started doing this after the accident.”

He reaches for it and stops. “Can I see?”

I hesitate. No one’s seen my drawings. But the gentleness in his eyes is reassuring and I slowly slide it toward him. “Sure, it’s just doodles. I don’t even think about it when I draw. It just flows out.”

He pulls it closer to look, then sucks in his breath. “You don’t know what this is?”

“No. Do you?”

His face is paler than usual and after a moment of hesitation, he nods.

“What is it?”

Evan scoots the notebook between the two of us. “See this? It’s a Celtic love knot.” His finger traces a scroll design in the middle. The lines on the page are so intricately woven it’s difficult to make out. Finally, two elaborate interwoven hearts jump out, one upside down on the other.

“I didn’t even know I was doing this,” I whisper. “I can’t believe I drew that.”

“Why not? You’re an artist.”

I purse my lips and shake my head. “No. I don't know why I said that last night. I wasn’t lying, though. It just slipped out.”

His lips part as he stares at me in disbelief. “But you can draw. Look at this.” He points to the paper.

“No, I only started doing this after the accident. I could never draw anything before.”

He sits back in his chair in silence.

“You said this was a Celtic knot. I thought Celtic knots were three interwoven triangles, not two hearts.”

After a couple seconds, he sits straighter. “Um…” He rubs a hand over his face. “Celtic knots have lots of different shapes and styles. Triangles usually represent the Holy Trinity. This is a love knot, which is why it has two hearts. The lines don’t have a beginning or an end. It represents a timeless love.”

“How do you know about Celtic knots?”

He pauses, then, for the first time since he saw the page, he smiles. “I’m Irish. Part of my heritage.”

“Whittaker doesn’t sound very Irish.”

“I’m Irish on my mother’s side.”

“Lucky you. I’m German. You get St. Patrick’s Day and Celtic folklore. I get wiener schnitzel and sauerkraut.”

The smile disappears. “You’re different.”

Dread creeps in. “I thought that was obvious.” My words are clipped.

“Wait. That’s not what I meant.”

Pulling the notebook away, I close the cover. “That’s okay. I know what I am.”

“And what exactly do you think you are?”

I heave a sigh. “A freak.”

He grabs my chin and turns my head to face him. His eyes narrow and he looks angry. “You’re not a freak and don’t you let anyone make you think you are. You’ve been through hell.”

The courage to ask the question burning in my gut erupts. “Why now, Evan? Why notice me now?”

He searches my face. “Because it took me this long to find you.”

Topics to Vote On:1. Hottest Literary Boy/Girl
2. Best Book Couple
3. Funniest Literary Clown
4. Most Outgoing
5. Best Dressed
6. Most Thought About

1. Hottest Literary Boy/Girl: For me the hottest literary boy ever would have to be Bones from the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. But since this is a YA book blog, I'll have to go with Daemon from Obsidan by Jennifer L. Armentrout because this is one smoking-hot alien!

2. Best Book Couple: I love Shane and Clare from the Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine! They are so amazing and cute together!

3. Funniest Literary Clown: I loved Scout and Lily from the Dark Elite series! Together, their funny antics always made me laugh!

4. Most Outgoing: Lily from the Dark Elite series by Chloe Neill is one of the most outgoing characters (I can think of at the moment). She could probably get along with anyone.

5. Best Dressed: I would have to say Isabelle from the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. This girl knew how to dress in style. And has even battled demons in a dress and high-heels.

6. Most Thought About:
The most though about book for me would probably be Delirium by Lauren Oliver! This is seriously my favorite book ever and I absolutely loved the sequel, Pandemonium, as well. If you haven't read this series yet, then you need to get on that, like, right now.  :))

Review: The Weepers: The Other Life by Susanne Winnacker

Title: The Weepers: The Other Life
Author: Susanne Winnacker
Series: The Other Life, #1
Publisher: Marshall Cavendish
Publication Date: May 15, 2012

Synopsis: 3 years, 1 month, 1 week and 6 days since I’d seen daylight. One-fifth of my life.

Sherry and her family have lived sealed in a bunker in the garden since things went wrong up above. Her grandfather has been in the freezer for the last three months, her parents are at each other’s throats and two minutes ago they ran out of food.

Sherry and her father leave the safety of the bunker and find a devastated and empty LA, smashed to pieces by bombs and haunted by ‘Weepers’ - rabid humans infected with a weaponized rabies virus.

While searching for food in a supermarket, Sherry’s father disappears and Sherry is saved by Joshua, a boy-hunter. He takes her to Safe-haven, a tumble-down vineyard in the hills outside LA, where a handful of other survivors are picking up the pieces of their ‘other lives’. As she falls in love for the first time, Sherry must save her father, stay alive and keep Joshua safe when his desire for vengeance threatens them all.

Verdict: I really, really, really, really, really liked this book. But I didn't love it. It seemed to be lacking that big spark that makes me obsess over a book even when I'm not reading it. Now, don't get me wrong, I was very interested in the book and will definitely be reading the sequel because I want to know what happens to the characters that I've become attached to. I loved the main character, Sherry, and her little brother, Bobby, and little sister, Mia. And I totally have a crush on Joshua, the hot and troubled hero. This book takes places sometime in the future when the government has been experimenting with rabies. But it got out of control and has turned people into man-eating monsters called weepers. The government sent out a warning telling people that they would need to hide out in bunkers for a while till it was safe to come out. Sherry and her family have been in their bunker a very long time- longer than expected. And they have run out of food and lost communication with everyone. So, Sherry and her dad decide to venture out of their bunker to look for food and to find out what has happened to their neighbors. But once outside they discover the horror of the weepers and things don't go exactly as planned. This book was fast-paced, action-packed and it flew by. I really, really liked it. And I definitely recommend it to lovers of dystopian, hot gun-wielding hunks, and fans of the movie I Am Legend. :))

Astarte's Wrath is the prequel to Destiny’s Fire.
Excerpt:
Whenever the sky bleeds, covering the once-blue pallet with crimson, and the bright ball of fire burns through billowy puffs of white, staining them and the earth in hues of red-orange and amber…and ash floats on a non-existent breeze, I know the Narcolym Guardians are waging a battle.
Shuttering my window, I unloose the hemp thread, and a sheer curtain veils the sand-covered horizon from my vision. My fingers trail the cream fabric, the tips tracing the darkening clouds against the light material as my other hand curls into a fist by my thigh, dousing the swirling vortex rising up at the charge in the air.
            “Star…?”
Astarte, I correct inwardly, but pinch my lips closed. “Yes, Habi?”
Habi’s footsteps echo throughout the mud-brick room as he approaches. “It’s time…”

And now, what you've all been waiting for. The beautiful cover:
