Book Review: Powerless by Tera Lynn Childs & Tracy Deebs

Title: Powerless
Authors: Tera Lynn Childs & Tracy Deebs
Series: The Hero Agenda, #1
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Publication Date: June 2, 2015

Synopsis: Kenna is tired of being "normal". The only thing special about her is that she isn't special at all. Which is frustrating in a world of absolutes. Villains, like the one who killed her father, are bad. Heroes, like her mother and best friend, are good. And Kenna, unlike everyone else around her, is completely ordinary— which she hates.

She’s secretly working on an experiment that will land her a place among the Heroes, but when a Villain saves her life during a break-in at her lab, Kenna discovers there’s a whole lot of gray area when it comes to good and evil and who she can trust.. After all…not all strength comes from superpowers.

Review: I am a huge sucker for superhero books! So I could not have been more excited to read Powerless and, thankfully, Tera Lynn Childs & Tracy Deebs did not disappoint. This book was so freakin' fun!!

The characters were all adorable! And I wanted to hug every member of the gang and maybe make out with one particular villain.... *cough* Draven *cough*

In this world, people are either good guys with superpowers (Heroes) or bad guys with superpowers (Villains). But just like our main character, Kenna, soon discovers, the world isn't always black & white or good & evil. There are always shades of grey. Villains can be good just as Heroes can be bad.

The plot was super engaging, with many twists and turns (some I predicted, some I didn't) all of which I loved. The minute the book ended, I absolutely needed the sequel.... like right now!!

All in all, I absolutely loved this book!! It was fun, action-packed, filled with superpowers, and a misfit gang searching for justice. I definitely recommend you pick this book up if you are a fan of Marvel or if you just enjoy pure awesomeness.

An ARC was provided for review by the publisher via NetGalley.

Rating: 5/5 Stars

The back of my eyes pulsed in time with the pounding in my head. My dark sunglasses didn’t block out enough of the light to stop it from aggravating my hangover. At least the nausea from earlier had passed. I groaned, turning my head toward Skye in the driver’s seat. She fared a little better than me, having had a restful night’s sleep. Nightmares had plagued my dreams all night. I blamed the beer.

We rounded the corner to my street and Skye cocked her head at me. “I thought you said your mom would be at work?”

I stared at the white Volvo in the driveway next to my red Mini Cooper. “She’s supposed to be.” Her shift at the hospital started an hour ago. “You think I’m busted?” Cherry on top of my freaking sundae.

Skye pointed to a Sheriff’s patrol car a little ways down the street. “I don’t know, but that’s not a good sign.”

I threw my head back against the headrest. “Shit! If Uncle Jim’s here I’m toast!” He’d take one look at me and know exactly what I spent my night doing.

She chuckled in a pitying, sarcastic way. “Good luck with that. So I’m guessing that movie later is a no if you and Derek are grounded.” She looked around for my brother’s canary yellow Mustang. “Where is Derek? He usually beats you home.”

Maybe Uncle Jim busted the party after I left. Maybe he found Derek there and he ratted me out. Jerk. So why wasn’t his car in the driveway? “Who knows?”

“Text me if they don’t take your phone away,” she shouted as I got out of the car.

She pulled out of the driveway and down the street. I took my sweet time getting to the door. I was most likely going to be grounded for the next month, so might as well enjoy my last few seconds of freedom. Hopefully it wouldn’t last more than a month or I’d miss Homecoming week. Aw, man, and the opening football game against our rivals. At least I’d still have softball practice.

When I reached the door, I ran my hands through my disheveled hair in a last ditch effort to conceal my previous night’s activities. I walked in, keeping the sunglasses on to cover my puffy eyes.

Uncle Jim’s voice echoed into the entry. “Emmy?”

There was no point trying to quietly shut the door behind me. Everyone sat in the living room just past the entryway. I couldn’t sneak past them to the stairs without being seen if my life depended on it. Taking one last breath to prepare myself for the upcoming punishment, I set my bag down and walked to the living room. What I found was not the stern and disappointed looks I expected.

Mom sat on the edge of the couch. Her blotchy face and swollen eyes told me she had been crying. Hard. Dad sat next to her with his arm around her, staring out the window with a dazed expression. My uncle stood in his Sheriff uniform leaning against the mantle on the wall and my cousin, Brayden, sat in the loveseat with his head in his hands, his eyes fixed on the beige carpeting.

What was Brayden doing here? He was supposed to be taking the SAT’s. He was a senior now and he already scored poorly twice. Today’s test was the last one he could take before he applied to college. He wouldn’t miss it. They couldn’t be over already.

I froze at the edge of the living room and slowly pulled off my sunglasses, a choking feeling constricting my lungs like a python. “What’s going on?”

No one spoke.

All eyes averted from mine.

Finally, my uncle cleared his throat. “Why don’t you take a seat?” His sunken face and steady tone felt like a rock falling into my stomach.

I swallowed the panic rising in my throat. “Why do I have to sit?”

Brayden took a deep breath and walked over to me. “Come on,” he said and led me to the loveseat to sit next to him. The room was dead quiet as I studied everyone’s grave faces. Something tickled the back of my brain. It tried to tell me what I already knew. I pushed it away, refusing to believe my paranoia.

“You guys are freaking me out!” I choked on the words. My breathing became shallow and forced.

Brayden put his hand on my arm.

Tears welled up in my eyes, stinging like tiny nettles. I turned to Brayden. “Where’s Derek?”

He didn’t answer, but the look in his eyes spoke volumes.

The tears spilled over my eyes and tremors racked my body. I turned my hysteria onto my parents. “Where is he!”

The question sent my mother into a fit of sobs.

Terror wrapped its bony fingers around my heart and squeezed, expelling the air from my lungs. Please, God. Don’t say it. Nonono. This wasn’t happening. Brayden looked me straight in the eye, a constellation of tears glistening on his lashes.

“Derek was in an accident.

Shaking my head, I pivoted around and walked down the long hall to my dorm room. As I reached the door, the shiver was at the base of my spine again, dancing its way up until it traveled across my shoulders. My heart turned over heavily and I closed my eyes.

Twice in one day.
 Oh God.
I’d never felt this more than once in any span of several days.

Swallowing hard, I wrapped my fingers around the doorknob, battling the urge to turn and scan the hall, because I knew no one would be there.

Dragging in a deep breath, I opened the door and stepped inside the room. My brows flew up, and I forgot about the feeling as I closed the door behind me. Erin was sprawled on the floor, palms pressed down on a mat, her spandex-covered behind jutting up toward the sky. She turned her head, peering at me from under her armpit.

Her armpit.

“How in the world do you get your neck to bend like that without killing yourself?” I asked.

“Skills, yo.”

Erin did yoga and meditation religiously, saying it helped merge her yin and yang together or something. She’d once told me she had a hell of a mean streak, and contorting herself into painful-looking positions helped keep “good vibrations” around her. Which was strange, because I’d never seen Erin lose her temper in the two years I’d known her.

Erin unfolded herself from some kind of downward dog or upward pony and grinned at me. “Check under the bed.”

Curious, I dropped my bag and stepped over her legs. Bending down, I lifted the bedspread and my eyes grew to the size of saucers when I spotted the bottle. I snatched it up and clutched it to my chest as I whipped toward her. “José!”

Her grin spread into a smile. “The best boyfriend ever.”

Happy Valentines Day!! (Guest Post)

Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.

Birds have always been equated with love, from creationist mythology to medieval poetry to modern times—particularly white doves. In Greek Mythology, Aphrodite (the goddess of Love), is often pictured with doves. In Judaism, doves are symbolic of purity, tenderness and hope. Christians traditionally use the dove as symbols of peace and love. Pagans, Native Americans, military and pacifist groups, the peace movement and even the Communist Party have used doves as a symbol.

But what made birds symbolic of love? It wasn't until the 14th Century that Geoffrey Chaucer composed a poem in honor of the engagement of England's Richard II and Anne of Bohemia entitled "Parliament of Foules" that love, the mating season of birds, and St. Valentine's Day were linked. By 1928, when Cole Porter wrote his popular song lyrics for "Let's Do It," birds were well-established case studies for courtship and love.

Doves are the perfect symbol for romance because they are monogamous. Unfortunately, they don't actually exist in the wild. They are in reality, a white variety of the Ringneck Dove, a small bird—not a strong flyer—that possesses a rather underdeveloped homing instinct. When you see "white doves" released at weddings, you're really witnessing white homing pigeons, who are stronger flyers and will return to their coop.

Lovebirds are also committed to one partner. This species of small parrot is native to the forests and savannas of Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. If you find them in the wild in the U.S., they're usually living in Arizona and escapees from an aviary.

But the truth is, birds are great role models for love. About ninety percent of the wild bird species are monogamous and mate for life.

Birds that do it in North America include:

Albatrosses. They usually don't hook up until they're eight or nine years old, but when they do, they stick together forever—and they've been documented to reach fifty years of age. They solidify their bond first by grooming each other, then performing a sort-of jousting ritual with their beaks, tapping them together in a choreographed dance.

Bald eagles. This majestic symbol of the Unites States stays together until "death do [us] part." Known to live as long as twenty-eight years in the wild, only if one dies will the other find another mate. Their spectacular courtship rituals include locking talons, flipping, spinning and twirling through the air, spiraling toward the ground and pulling out before the crash in what's commonly called a Cartwheel Display.

Whooping cranes. This bird, which neared extinction, is making a bit of a comeback. When they migrate north to their breeding grounds, they perform elaborate dance to choose the mates they will keep for their twenty-two to twenty-four years in the wild. The tallest birds in North America, to attract their partners, they will bow their heads, flap their wings, leap and bounce. They are not afraid to make a spectacle of themselves.

So, take a lesson from the wild and the promise of spring. "Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it. Let's do it, let's fall in love."

Book Blitz: Exaltation by Jamie Magee (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Title: Exaltation
Author: Jamie Magee
Publication Date: February 10, 2015

Synopsis: Fate is a twisted b*$#@, at least his was.

Was one soul worth the lives of millions? The quandary was one that Rydell King had no choice but to face. No matter the answer, the truth remained—innocence was created to destroy him. She was beautiful…extinguishing her to save his people seemed impossible, and maybe it was. As an immortal, his focus was to destroy the curse upon his people, as he devoured the emotion that bore him—exaltation, no matter the cost. She made him question everything.

Mercy had never been crueler.

About the Author: Jamie Magee has always believed that each of us have a defining gift that sets us apart from the rest of the world, she has always envied those who have known from their first breath what their gift was. Not knowing hers, she began a career in the fast paced world of business. Raising a young family, and competing to rise higher in that field would drive some to the point of insanity, but she always found a moment of escape in a passing daydream. Her imagination would take her to places she’d never been, introduce her to people she’s never known. Insight, her debuting novel, is a result of that powerful imagination. Today, she is grateful that not knowing what defined her, led her on a path of discovery that would always be a part of her.

The last few hours flew by. Raven was warmed up enough and had seen Soren hop on the floor a bit ago to get himself loose.

He had made it a point to skate around her and give her that look. The one that made the girls around them scream like they were at a concert and the lead singer just leapt down into the crowd.

Raven found it hilarious they all thought she and Soren were really having some torrid love affair.

“All right. All right!” the DJ said over the mic. “I don’t know about ya’ll but I’ve been feeling a little sizzle in the air.”

The crowd screamed. Raven’s heart started to pound. She knew the spotlight was seconds away.

“Maybe a little young love, hmmmm?” the DJ prompted. “I’ve been told that someone wants the floor cleared!” The crowd whistled and roared as they started to clear away. “That’s right, clear the floor so this man can hold his woman.” Catcalls were heard from as far as the auditorium.

There were only a few stragglers on the floor so Raven started to pick up her skate. The lights went out which was her cue. She rolled into the center just as the spotlight came on. This part was easy, a few spins and in and outs, but the whistles had already started.

The music they were using was a mix of almost everything. It started out with a slow beat set to a snap and a deep bass that pounded at the perfect moment. Raven knew the second Soren glided on the floor because the girls screamed his name along with ‘marry me.’ Raven glanced back as if surprised he was skating toward her.

He rolled right up to her, her back against his front. He reached his fingertips for her jaw and wistfully outlined her cheek as their bodies waved slowly head to toe. This routine started out sensual and you didn’t get any more sensual than that, two bodies moving in rhythm as one.

Book Blitz: Debt Inheritance by Pepper Winters (Excerpt + Giveaway)

BOOK ONE: Debt Inheritance.

“I own you. I have the piece of paper to prove it. It’s undeniable and unbreakable. You belong to me until you’ve paid off your debts.”

Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Being the first born daughter, her life is forfeit to the first born son of the Hawks to pay for sins of ancestors past. The dark ages might have come and gone, but debts never leave. She has no choice in the matter.

She is no longer free.

Jethro Hawk receives Nila as an inheritance present on his twenty-ninth birthday. Her life is his until she’s paid off a debt that’s centuries old. He can do what he likes with her—nothing is out of bounds—she has to obey.

There are no rules. Only payments.

BOOK TWO: First Debt

“You say I’ll never own you. If I win—you willingly give me that right. You sign not only the debt agreement, but another—one that makes me your master until your last breath is taken. You do that, and I’ll give you this.”

Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Stolen, taken, and bound not by monsters but by an agreement written over six hundred years ago, she has no way out.

She belongs to Jethro as much as she denies it.

Jethro Hawk’s patience is running out. His inheritance gift tests, challenges, and surprises him—and not in good ways. He hasn’t leashed her but he thinks he might’ve found a way to bind her forever.

Debts are mounting. Payment waiting.

BOOK THREE: Second Debt

“I tried to play a game. I tried to wield deceit as perfectly as the Hawks. But when I thought I was winning, I wasn’t. Jethro isn’t what he seems—he’s the master of duplicity. However, I refuse to let him annihilate me further.”

Nila Weaver has grown from naïve seamstress to full-blown fighter. Every humdrum object is her arsenal, and sex…sex is her greatest weapon of all.

She’s paid the First Debt. She’ll probably pay more.

But she has no intention of letting the Hawks win.

Jethro Hawk has found more than a worthy adversary in Nila—he’s found the woman who could destroy him. There’s a fine line between hatred and love, and an even finer path between fear and respect.

The fate of his house rests on his shoulders, but no matter how much ice lives inside his heart, Nila flames too bright to be extinguished.

“You think you’ve got it all figured out, don’t you?” His arm hoisted me onto the tips of my toes. Breathing was difficult, not fighting was impossible, but I permitted it. All I did was stare silently into his golden eyes.

“I understand what you’re doing.” He smiled. “But mark my words. You won’t win.” Shaking me, he unwound his fingers, then smoothed the front of his jeans. The sun gleamed on the gold buckle of his crocodile skin belt.

My stomach clenched, but I held my ground. Raising my chin, I whispered, “Mark my words. I will win. Because I am right and you are wrong.”

Book Blitz: How to Unbreakup by Rebekah L. Purdy (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Title: How to Unbreakup
Author: Rebekah L. Purdy
Publisher: Swoon Romance
Publication Date: February 10, 2015

Synopsis: First rule of breakups: There’s no going back.

For three years, seventeen-year-old Grace Evers has regretted breaking up with Sage Castle.

That day, she lost her boyfriend and best friend. And let's be honest, it's impossible to just be friends with the one person who gets you, faults and all, and loved you anyway. It's impossible not to think about how it felt to be held by him, or the way he looked right before he was about to kiss you with the most perfectly yummy kiss goodnight.

And now that things are over between them, they've become strangers to one another. Sage won’t even look at Grace, let alone talk to her!

Breakup life sucks and Grace is utterly miserable, doing whatever she can to ease the pain of losing Sage. She's spent the better part of high school pretending to be something she’s not and hanging out with people who probably wouldn't notice if she wasn't there. Crappy dates, backstabbing friends, and Sage's cold shoulder have taken their toll.

So when her parents propose going away to their house on Lake Michigan for the summer, Grace is thrilled. No more massively bad dates with horrible kissers or lunch with frienemies. Just three months of swimming,

hiking, and relaxing before senior year starts.

But when Grace learns Sage and his family will be joining them, she readies herself for a totally awkward family vacation of disastrous proportions. How can it be anything but awful if Sage won't even acknowledge she exists?

This is it, Grace's last chance to get Sage back and unbreakup.

About the Author: Rebekah Purdy grew up in Michigan, where she spent many late nights armed with a good book and a flashlight. When not hiding at her computer and getting lost in her stories, she enjoys reading, singing, soccer, swimming, football, camping, playing video games and hanging out with her kids. She loves the unexplainable like Bigfoot, the Dogman, and the Loch Ness Monster (lots of good story material)! She admits to still having all the books she bought throughout her childhood and teen years, and she may or may not have an obsession with anything chocolate…

“Let’s check out the deck.” Mom looped her arm through mine as we made our way around the furniture to the glass doors. As soon as we pushed them open, the scent of the lake and beach hit me. The sound of gulls echoed in the air. Beach chairs lined the deck, the view breathtaking. From here, I saw there was already a fire pit dug out on the beach. The doorbell rang from inside and Mom squealed. “Come on,” she said. My parents rushed to the front door, us kids on their heels.

“Time for our other surprise.” Dad glanced at us as he whipped open the door. There, standing on the porch, was the Castle family. No. Flipping. Way. Sage’s mouth dropped open in disbelief. He met my gaze then looked away, obviously his parents hadn’t let him in on the surprise either. I squeezed my eyes tight then opened them again, trying to ignore the sick pit in my stomach. Okay. Just keep calm. It isn’t the end of the world. Not yet anyway. “Welcome Castle family,” Dad said, hugging Mr. and Mrs. Castle. “The Evers and Castles together again.”

Mr. Castle chuckled. “Now how’s this for a surprise?”

“I gave up soccer camp for this?” Sage asked, his eyes narrowed.

“Yep, and you’re going to enjoy it. End of discussion.” Mr. Castle gave him a warning look. Sage pushed inside, carrying his stuff, not even bothering another glance in my direction. Crap. This wasn’t happening. It might be the end of discussion for Mr. Castle, but I had a feeling this was far from over. If things kept going like they were, it’d be a long, miserable summer for all of us.

Allie smiled as she came inside. “This is freaking sweet. We’ll be able to hang out all summer. Just like old times.”

“Yeah. Just like old times.” I gave her a quick hug. Minus the part where Sage actually talked to me. Things in my life were about to get a whole lot more complicated.
