Blog Tour: Dream of Me by Quinn Loftis (Guest Post + Giveaway)

Title: Dream of Me
Author: Quinn Loftis
Series: Dream Maker, #1
Publication Date: February 28, 2015

Synopsis: “In the evening… [he] blows softly upon their necks, till their heads begin to droop. […] Under each arm he carries an umbrella; one of them, with pictures on the inside, he spreads over the good children, and then they dream the most beautiful stories the whole night.” ~ Hans Christian Anderson

Since the dawn of time, Brudair, otherwise known as the Sandman to the world, has faithfully lived out his purpose, faithfully performed his duties. He has never questioned his lot among the immortals, until now, until her. Sarah Serenity Tillman, a consummate beauty both inside and out, is a high school senior five months from her graduation. She has great plans, dreams of leaving the small town of her childhood behind her forever. But destiny has other plans, and it’s the Sandman’s job to make sure those plans are fulfilled.

The tall muscular Sandman, known as Dair to his friends, dressed in black, wrapped in shadows, is more than a myth. And he has a job to do. His very existence makes him a creature of the night, because dreams, (yes the legends got that part right), were indeed his specialty. But his purpose was more than just weaving dreams for sleeping children. No, his dreams were made to influence, made to ensure that certain special individuals, those individuals who would change the course of history, actually accepted their chosen destiny.

Little does Serenity know that she is Dair’s next assignment. And the dream that he weaves for her, if she follows its influence, will change the course of, not only her life, but possibly the whole of history as well. But she isn’t the only one being influenced. The beauty inside of her was weighing on the Sandman, lighting up the darkness that was his constant companion. Her light was warmth, it was life, and he didn’t understand how he had survived the previous millennia without it.

The Sandman was indeed greater than anything humans had ever imagined, and his purpose was vital to the course of history. So what happens when the weaver of dreams gets so distracted by a mere human that he ignores his own duties in the immortal realm? How can an immortal who was never meant to have a mate, join a young woman in her destiny without irrevocably changing the lives of millions and potentially altering history in a way the Creator never intended?

“Dream of me, Princess,” Dair whispered into her ear.
“Then weave me a dream, Sandman,” she said softly. “And we can dream together.”
As her eyes grew heavy, she heard Dair’s voice telling her to sleep, to open her mind to him and let him in. I’m all yours, she thought as sleep finally claimed her.

Author Interview: Jennifer L. Armentrout

I did an author interview (sort of) with Jennifer L. Armentrout!! So on April 1, JLA took over Avon Romance's facebook page and we had the opportunity to ask her some questions. And let's just say, I really took advantage of the situation.

I asked enough questions that I felt I should compile them all together.  :)

Now that's something I've got to see!

So today, April 17, JLA took over HarperCollins' twitter account and I asked her a few more questions!  :)

That is sooo cool!

I adore that movie!!

Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

Book Spotlight: Rain of the Ghosts by Greg Weisman (Author Interview)

Title: Rain of the Ghosts
Author: Greg Weisman
Series: Rain Cacique, #1
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: December 3, 2013

Synopsis: Rain of the Ghosts is the first in Greg Weisman's series about an adventurous young girl, Rain Cacique, who discovers she has a mystery to solve, a mission to complete and, oh, yes, the ability to see ghosts.

Welcome to the Prospero Keys (or as the locals call them: the Ghost Keys), a beautiful chain of tropical islands on the edge of the Bermuda Triangle. Rain Cacique is water-skiing with her two best friends Charlie and Miranda when Rain sees her father waiting for her at the dock. Sebastian Bohique, her maternal grandfather, has passed away. He was the only person who ever made Rain feel special. The only one who believed she could do something important with her life. The only thing she has left to remember him by is the armband he used to wear: two gold snakes intertwined, clasping each other’s tails in their mouths. Only the armband . . . and the gift it brings: Rain can see dead people. Starting with the Dark Man: a ghost determined to reveal the Ghost Keys’ hidden world of mystery and mysticism, intrigue and adventure.

About the Author: Greg Weisman (BA Stanford, MPW U.S.C.) has been a storyteller all his life. His first professional work was as an Editor for DC Comics, where he also wrote Captain Atom.

Greg worked at Walt Disney Television Animation from 1989 through 1996. In 1991, Greg created and developed a new series for Disney: GARGOYLES, becoming Supervising Producer and Supervising Story Editor of that series.

In 1998, Greg became a full-time Freelancer. He wrote the new Gargoyles and Gargoyles: Bad Guys comic books for SLG Publishing, while producing, writing, story editing and voice acting for Sony’s The Spectacular Spider-Man. He then moved over to Warner Bros., where he produced, story edited, wrote and voice acted on the new series, Young Justice, as well as writing the companion Young Justice monthly comic book for DC.

Greg was a writer and Executive Producer on the first season of Star Wars Rebels for Lucasfilm and Disney, and he’s also writing the spin-off comic Star Wars Kanan: The Last Padawan. His first novel, Rain of the Ghosts, was published in 2013; its sequel, Spirits of Ash and Foam, arrived in bookstores in 2014.

Author Interview:

Hi Greg! First off, I'd like to thank you for joining me on the blog today. And I want to let you know that Gargoyles was one of my favorite shows as a kid- so I’m already a huge fan! This leads me to my first question.

1. How has being a writer/producer for TV shows helped you with this YA project?

Well, for the Rain of the Ghosts AudioPlay, I’ve called on all my skills as a producer and ALL my friends from years in the business to cast, record and produce this wondrous thing.

2. Describe Rain of the Ghosts as a tweet (140 characters or less)!

Living and working in her parents’ B&B on the Ghost Keys, Rain Cacique starts seeing ghosts, solving mysteries and fulfilling her destiny.

Whew! That was tough.

3. What kind of research, if any, did you do for Rain of the Ghosts?

I did quite a bit of research for Rain of the Ghosts, on the history, culture and mythology of the Caribbean. I did even more research for the second book in the series, Spirits of Ash and Foam. More research on the mythology of the TaĆno people and their culture and history. Research on dolphin, bat, manatee and mosquito biology. Research on hurricanes. On bioluminescence. Research on Caribbean synagogues, etc. By that time, I had actually visited the Caribbean, too.

4. I love that you have a Kickstarter project in the works for a Full Cast AudioPlay of Rain of the Ghosts. How did you come up with the idea?

It started simply enough. I wanted an audio-book of Rain. But my narrator is an adult male, and my lead character is a 13-year-old girl. I couldn’t stand the idea of listening to some guy like me struggling to do Rain’s voice for most of the dialogue. So I fell back on what I knew from working in animation: a full-cast recording with music and sound effects. I’m basically making a studio-quality cartoon, with everything but the cartoon. That’s the key thing here: this is NOT an audio-book. This is an unabridged full-cast AudioPlay!

(You guys, if you this sounds awesome, head on over to Greg's KICKSTARTER page to learn more and support!)

5. When writing Rain of the Ghosts, did you plot the entire book out or did you take a more flexible, by the seat of your pants approach?

No, I’m a planner. Very low tech. Hundreds of index cards in various colors on a giant bulletin board. I use these cards to create a detailed outline. But I still have to leave myself open to being surprised. In Spirits, there were two characters that I thought were very minor. But they quickly asserted themselves, and suddenly I found myself creating arcs for both.

6. What are some of your favorite books?

Absalom, Absalom by William Faulkner. The Blue Hammer by Ross Macdonald. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Really, that just scratches the surface.

7. What is your favorite medium to work with for storytelling?

Don’t have one. I love working in both animation and comic books. And writing these novels. And working on this AudioPlay. I’ve written Radio Plays for conventions. And I even wrote a stage play once in graduate school. I just love telling stories. That’s always been who I am.

This or That...

Ebook or Real book?

Twitter or Facebook?

Chocolate or Vanilla?

Chocolate Chip.

Past or Future?

Oh, I live and work in both, really.

And just for fun- What is the strangest thing on your desk right now?

A “Debra from Dexter” bobble-head.

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog!

Thanks for inviting me. ;)

Don't forget to head over to the Kickstarter page and check out some of the super cool rewards!

Book Review: Hold Me Like A Breath by Tiffany Schmidt

Title: Hold Me Like A Breath
Author: Tiffany Schmidt
Series: Once Upon a Crime Family, #1
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Publication Date: May 19, 2015

Synopsis: Penelope Landlow has grown up with the knowledge that almost anything can be bought or sold—including body parts. She’s the daughter of one of the three crime families that control the black market for organ transplants.

Penelope’s surrounded by all the suffocating privilege and protection her family can provide, but they can't protect her from the autoimmune disorder that causes her to bruise so easily.

And in her family's line of work no one can be safe forever.

All Penelope has ever wanted is freedom and independence. But when she’s caught in the crossfire as rival families scramble for prominence, she learns that her wishes come with casualties, that betrayal hurts worse than bruises, that love is a risk worth taking . . . and maybe she’s not as fragile as everyone thinks.

Review: This book absolutely blew me away! It was not at all what I expected, but in the best way possible. The main character, Penelope Landlow lives in a crime family that deals in the black market for organ transplants.

If that, in and of itself, isn't interesting enough, Penelope has a disease that causes her to bruise very easily. Although many people view her as being weak, she proves them all wrong in an epic adventure full of heartbreak, danger, and many twists and turns.

I really loved reading about the crime family aspect and how they operated. Equally intriguing was Penelope's disease; I had vaguely heard of people who had such a disease, but it's really hard to understand exactly what they go through on a day-to-day basis. I feel like I've really learned and have a great respect for those who have a disease/disorder that some would try to view as a weakness, but who refuse to let it become one.

Overall, this was a fantastic story about bravery and standing up for yourself with a sweet side of romance. I definitely recommend it!

An ARC was provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Book Blitz: Bone Dry by Cady Vance (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Title: Bone Dry
Author: Cady Vance
Series: Soul Shamans, #1
Publisher: Sagan Press
Publication Date: February 3, 2015

Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis: Sometimes it isn’t as easy as choosing right or wrong.

Sixteen-year-old Holly Bennett is a comic book nerd, a con artist, and a shaman. Most days Holly wishes she could trade in her power of spirit communication for something more useful--like fireballs or Wolverine claws. She knows spirits aren't exactly Casper the Friendly Ghosts. They're dangerous beings from Lower World who snack on human life, and messing with the magic from their world is an express ticket to big trouble. But when a shaman sticks her mom's mind between their world and ours, Holly becomes the unexpected breadwinner in the family. She uses her burgeoning shaman powers to set up fake hauntings and "banish" the so-called ghosts from her wealthy classmates' bedrooms. For a fee, of course.

When actual spirits start manifesting, Holly discovers that other shamans have come to town, summoning life-sucking spirits for their own ends. And the newcomers may just hold the clue Holly's been looking for--the one that can release her mom's mind from its Lower World prison. With the help of both a cute web comic artist and her partner-in-con, Holly plots to take them down, throwing her into a whirlwind of speedboat getaways, breaking and entering, and astral projections into the spirit world. And as her mom's mind slips further away, Holly has to fight to save her, and the rest of the town, before they get sucked into Lower World permanently.

There are times when I listen to the moralistic words of the angel on my right shoulder rather than the wicked whispers of the demon on my left. With Kylie Wilkinson leaning across the cafeteria table, eager to hand over cash I so desperately needed, I couldn’t help but smack the halo off that perfect little angel.

“Two hundred bucks,” I said, holding my hand palm up. The eagerness on Kylie’s heart-shaped face fell into a scowl. She tucked a stray strand of glossy hair behind her polka-dotted headband and shifted in her seat.

“You’ve got to be kidding me, Holly.”

I pulled back my hand, closed my fingers into a fist and pretended to be interested in my bologna sandwich. That move got them every time. The din of cafeteria chatter rose up around us as we sat in silence. Girls laughed, plates clattered and sneakers squeaked. Five seconds passed before Kylie cleared her throat.

“Okay, wait.” She reached into her Eddie Bauer backpack and pulled out her wallet.

I kept my attention on my sandwich, nibbling away while she anxiously counted the cash. She had exactly four fifties which made me think she already knew what I charged and had been playing me to see if I’d go lower.

A guy walking by our table stopped to watch the transaction. I turned to raise my eyebrows at the tall, thin figure towering over us. Nathan Whitman, Kylie’s ex-boyfriend. He flashed a grin at me, his dark, wavy hair curling on his forehead, his high cheekbones carving a V on his otherwise boyish face. I smiled around my sandwich and hoped I didn’t have bits of meat stuck between my teeth.

“Is our friendly, neighborhood ghostbuster in action again?”

I’d taken a case for Nathan last year. He’d thought he was being haunted—they all did. Before that day, I’d considered Nathan just another bland guy navigating the Seaport High popular crowd. A preppy sailor only interested in country clubs and stock points. But after seeing the stacks of comic books in his room, I decided there might be an interesting guy hiding behind the polo shirts.

Not that I’d ever had the time to find out.
