May Wrap-Up

The prepubescent gif of Justin Timberlake may be a tad inaccurate since May has already passed, but I couldn't resist.

So I only read 4 books this month and my 2015 Goodreads Challenge is mocking me.

Onto the books!!

I absolutely had to read The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West! It released at the beginning of the month and was a really cute contemporary read, which is exactly what I was in the mood for! I devoured the entire thing in one sitting because I could not get enough of quirky Gia, adorable Hayden, and their hilarious banter.

Next thing I know, I found myself in the mood for a historical romance. So I picked up Catch a Falling Heiress by Laura Lee Guhrke. I really enjoyed this book and gave it a solid 4.5/5 stars. It featured a strong heroine, a swoon-worthy hero, and a big scandal.

One of my favorite authors, Jeaniene Frost, posted a free short story called Pack on her website, so I obviously took the time to read it. It was super, super short but it definitely got me excited for when she expands the story and re-releases it later.

This got me in the paranormal mood, so I grabbed Eternal Hunter by Cynthia Eden. This book has got shifters, vampires, and demons, oh my! The main character, Erin, is being stalked by a wolf shifter hybrid, so she enlists the help of a rare white tiger shifter, but then things get a little heated.

Currently Reading:

I'm finally reading Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover!! I've heard so many amazing things and can't wait to see if it lives up to the hype. (It's also nice to picture Miles Archer as Nick Bateman.)

Update: It's the last day of May, I just finished reading Ugly Love, and I HAVE SO MANY FEELS!!!!

Blog Tour: Clearer in the Night by Rebecca Croteau (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Title: Clearer in the Night
Author: Rebecca Croteau
Publisher: Penner Publishing
Publication Date: May 11, 2015

Synopsis: Cait’s used to being an outsider. The odd girl out, the one with the alcoholic mother. The one whose sister and father died. The one who might just have telepathy. These things she could manage, could hide just enough to get by. Now a werewolf’s bite forces her outside the whole human race.

Two men—the one night hook-up who shows up at her hospital bed, and the rescuer worker who may be following her—seem to know more about her condition than she does…and about this strange world of magic she’s pulled into. As Cait plunges into this darker reality, painful secrets of her past are churned up and she’s forced to confront her new identity.

Torn between the between the sweet and too-hot-to-be-true Eli and possessive, darkly sensual Wes, Cait must decide whom to trust and which side to choose…before it’s too late.

About the Author: Rebecca, Ree to her friends, lives with her family in the wilds of New England. She is owned by two cats, and enjoys discovering the various ways that one can enjoy string. She is fueled by coffee, and strong autumn breezes.

I kept my gaze low, focusing on the step in front of me, and then the one after that, and then the one after that. Just the next step, Cait. Don’t worry about what happens when your lungs tighten up again, and just run. Just keep moving.

That’s probably why I ran straight into someone. When running, remember to keep your eyes up. At least every once in a while. When you stare at your own feet, you smack straight into someone, hitting them with a huge oof of force, and the both of you go down in an unattractive and painful tangle of limbs and elbows. He must have seen me coming, though; he wrapped his arms around me, and managed to roll us both towards the grass, instead of landing on the sidewalk, and take the worst of the fall. We ended up side by side, and I looked up as I caught my breath—then lost it again as I met Eli’s deep blue eyes and slight, almost teasing, smile.

“Well,” he said, without loosening the circle of his arms. “I wasn’t expecting that.”

I almost relaxed. For no reason, for no sane reason, I almost let him hold me. And then I forced a laugh and pushed myself away. “Hey, sorry about that, I was—”

He let me go, still smiling that secret smile. “It happens.”

I sat up, collecting my arms and legs and detangling them from his. “Do you regularly get knocked over by girls who can’t be bothered to see where they’re going?”

“Okay, it’s not an everyday occurrence.”

“What are you doing here, anyway?” My tone was more accusatory than I’d meant it to be, but I let it stand. Because I was curious.

Book Tour: Lola Carlyle's 12-Step Romance by Danielle Younge-Ullman (Guest Post + Giveaway)

Title: Lola Carlyle's 12-Step Romance
Author: Danielle Younge-Ullman
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Publication Date: May 5, 2015

Synopsis: Lola Carlyle is lonely, out of sorts, and in for a boring summer. So when her best friend, Sydney, calls to rave about her stay at a posh Malibu rehab and reveals that the love of Lola’s life, Wade Miller, is being admitted, she knows what she has to do.Never mind that her worst addiction is decaf cappuccino; Lola is going to rehab.

Lola arrives at Sunrise Rehab intent solely on finding Wade, saving him from himself, and—naturally—making him fall in love with her…only to discover she’s actually expected to be an addict. And get treatment. And talk about her issues with her parents, and with herself. Plus she has insane roommates, and an irritatingly attractive mentor, Adam, who’s determined to thwart her at every turn.

Oh, and Sydney? She’s gone.

Turns out, once her pride, her defenses, and her best friend are stripped away, Lola realizes she’s actually got a lot to overcome…if she can open her heart long enough to let it happen.

About the Author: Danielle Younge-Ullman is a novelist, playwright and freelance writer. She studied English and Theater at McGill University, then returned to her hometown of Toronto to work as professional actor for ten years. Danielle’s short story, Reconciliation, was published in MODERN MORSELS—a McGraw-Hill Anthology for young adults—in 2012, her one-act play, 7 Acts of Intercourse, debuted at Toronto's SummerWorks Festival in 2005, and her adult novel, FALLING UNDER, was published by Penguin in 2008. Danielle lives in Toronto with her husband and two daughters.

Guest Post:

One of the things I wanted to be when I grew up was an actor—specifically a Shakespearean actor. I therefore spent a lot of time studying and working on classical theatre, learning about iambic pentameter, and so on. I did get to be an actor, throughout my twenties and into my thirties, and in that time I got to play a few (not enough) great classical roles, the biggest and most fun being Portia in The Merchant of Venice.

Now, none of this qualifies me to write sonnets, not good ones anyway… but I like to write them anyway, purely for entertainment value. So I wrote one for LOLA CARLYLE’S 12 STEP ROMANCE. No spoilers, I promise. It’s more of a teaser…a fun way to tell you what it’s about.

Sonnet for Lola

Lola, you n’er thought you’d be a fake
But summer is lonely when holding a torch
Wade Miller in rehab…a piece of cake
You’ll help him recover, then his heart? Scorch.

But when the doors lock you’re dismayed to see
This elegant “spa”… is more like a jail.
Crazed roommates, strict mentor, you cannot get free
No texting, no phoning, not even email.

No romance allowed, harassed all day long
Melting down, telling lies, hurting like hell
Adam-the-mentor all sexy and wrong
Can’t stop your therapist ringing her bell

Too late you realize this isn’t a game
Will you survive it, or go up in flames?

(Don’t try this at home. Actually, do! If you write one for LOLA and send it to me, I’ll post it on my blog.)

Thanks so much for having me!
